ChatGPT for Translators assistance
How to use
ChatGPT for Translators is built into the Wordscope editor. You do not open a separate ChatGPT website, and you do not need an API key.
You can work in two simple ways: select a text, then click a button, or click a button with no selection (Wordscope uses the current segment).
Where to start:
1️⃣ Open a project.
2️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button.
3️⃣ You can also type a question and press ENTER.
Select a text, then click a button
Use this when you need help on one word or phrase.
1️⃣ Open the segment you are translating.
2️⃣ In the source or the target, select the word or the phrase with the mouse.
3️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button if the window is not already open.
4️⃣ Click an action button (for example Explain, Definition, Terminology).
5️⃣ Read the answer in the ChatGPT window.
Selection is useful for terms. If nothing is selected, many buttons still work: they use the whole current segment.
Click a button (no selection)
Use this for the whole sentence: improve fluency, proofread, suggest alternatives.
1️⃣ Click the segment you want to work on.
2️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button.
3️⃣ Click a shortcut button (for example Rephrase, Proofread, Alternatives).
4️⃣ Check the answer, then copy or adapt what you need into the target.
The window subtitle says it: Type a question and press ENTER, or a few words and click one of the shortcut buttons.
Type a question and press ENTER
1️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button.
2️⃣ Click in the ChatGPT input area.
3️⃣ Type your question in any language.
4️⃣ Press ENTER.
5️⃣ Read the answer below.
To set how ChatGPT answers:
1️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button.
2️⃣ Click the Settings tab.
3️⃣ Set Language (the language ChatGPT should use to answer you).
4️⃣ Set Domain (the field of your text: legal, medical, etc.).
Organising your screen
You can keep ChatGPT as a floating window, or pin it to the side so it stays open while you translate.
Always-on ChatGPT (1200 px or more)
If your screen (or the editor window) is at least 1200 pixels wide, you can place ChatGPT as a third column, next to the text and the suggestion panel. It stays on while you move from segment to segment.
1️⃣ Make the browser window wide enough (1200 px or more).
2️⃣ Click the ChatGPT button.
3️⃣ Show the suggestion panel on the side if you want the three-column layout (text | suggestions | ChatGPT).
4️⃣ Click the control to Place ChatGPT to the side (3rd column).
5️⃣ Translate as usual. ChatGPT stays visible on the right.
Wordscope remembers this layout. Next time you open a project on a wide screen, ChatGPT can come back as the side column automatically.
If the window is narrower than 1200 px, ChatGPT cannot sit next to both the text and the suggestion panel. Widen the editor, or let ChatGPT overlay the suggestion panel instead.
Resizing panels
1️⃣ Move the mouse to the vertical line between the text and the suggestion panel.
2️⃣ Click and drag left or right until the text is comfortable to read.
3️⃣ Move the mouse to the line on the left edge of the ChatGPT column.
4️⃣ Drag to make ChatGPT wider or narrower.
5️⃣ Release the mouse. Wordscope keeps these widths for next time.
Give more width to the text if you work on long sentences. Give more width to ChatGPT if you read long explanations.
Next step: customise which buttons you see, and build your own libraries. See Prompt Libraries.
